150 Players to Port Macquarie
On the weekend, about 150 players from Valentine are visiting Port Macquarie for a weekend of Football! We are taking teams from U12 to First Grade Men and Women, with a couple of Over 35 teams showing the flag as well! Should be a great weekend away! Many thanks to Justin McIntyre who has prepared the following article for the Port News! LOCALS TAKE ON PHOENIX IN BIG FOOTBALL WEEKEND
Valentine Phoenix who play in the NBN State League will be in town tomorrow and a full days fixture list is all ready to go at Wayne Richards Park in Port Macquarie. Football Mid North Coast sides will be playing host to the Phoenix juniors before local Premier League clubs Port United and Macleay Valley Rangers will take on strong youth and senior outfits from Valentine.
In an action packed day, the FMNC U12 squads will get things rolling before the FMNC Regional Youth League teams (U13, U14 and U15) will take to the field. United will then provide two squads to play the Phoenix youth sides, before Macleay Valley Rangers do battle in the First Grade clash. On at the same time, a combined FMNC Ladies team will tackle Valentine, who play in the Herald Women's Premier League.
Port United Secretary Justin McIntyre said "it shapes up as a great day of football with a lot of very good young talent on show. We're looking forward to our first hit out for seniors and there's also 15 United kids in the FMNC sides, so it's a big start to the season for us". FMNC representative Gregg McDonald added "we invite everyone along to support our local sides and see a good day of football. Canteen facilities will be available and everyone should have a good day".
FMNC U12's (Pt.Macq) vs Valentine U13's (10am) Coaches Chris Walsh and Mark Pilgrim currently have 19 boys in the Port Macquarie squad, with 4 out of the 19 representing the Kempsey Development team. The team only has a few changes from last year and both coaches are looking forward to applying some vigorous coaching and technical development over the next 5-6 months.
Last year was the first year for both Pilgrim and Walsh coaching the Port Macquarie development side with the team being competitive against some of the well drilled Newcastle sides. This year they have been presented with another strong squad so they are "expecting some good results and some tough battles with the southern clubs" said Chris Walsh. This game on the weekend will be no different with a strong Valentine club making the journey up the Pacific Highway for Saturdays fixtures.
FMNC U12's (Pt. Macq) Squad - Tom Biron, Nick Brown, Liam Coelho, Kade Fens, Jordon Good, Angus Guimot, Blake Johnson, Jarrod Latimer, Jai Markwort, Tom Morgan, Jack Pilgrim, Ben Stocks, Jack Stone, Connor Walsh, Jamieson Williams
FMNC RYL U13's vs Valentine U14's (11.15am)
The FMNC 13's boys squad are looking forward to the weekends trail match against the strong NBN club Valentine Phoenix. With last weekends first trial match against Northern Inland washed out the boys need a strong hit out before the first match of the rep season the week after when they face Hunter valley at Wayne Richards Park.
Five of the players have been involved in the Johnny Warren program in the off season which will set them up nicely for the long season ahead. This squad is the start of a new era under Technical Director Geoff Finch and coach Larry Budgen with the future of FMNC football looking very positive in every aspect.
FMNC U13 RYL Squad - Lachlan Albion, Daniel Baker, Scott Buchanan, Joshua Chambers, Evan Clarke, Brayden Fisher, Paul Galloway, Wil Kelleher, Zach Latham, Daniel Morrison, Aaron Oppedisano, Luke Rogers, Michael Snow, Eli Wade, Dylan Whalen
FMNC RYL U15's vs Valentine U16/17's (2pm) The FMNC 15's boys side looks a solid outfit on paper with many talented players within the squad. The nucleus of the squad which has played together now heading into it's third season together. Coach Gregg McDonald said "a number of new players have joined the team this season to bolster squad strength and we hope that if the side plays to it's potential, we may just trouble the fancied Newcastle opponents during the upcoming season".
The squad was due to have a trial last weekend but unfortunately it was washed out, so Saturday will be a big step up against older opposition. Guiding the side this season is Anthony Clarke who will once again be team manager and assistance coach, ably assisting coach McDonald.
FMNC U15 Boys RYL Squad - Liam Clarke, Daniel Freeman, Aaron Grose, Joshua Johnston, Kaleb Langbien, Blake Latimer, Jack McDonald, Corey Nash, Olivia Price, Thomas Rienstra, Dean Rounsevell, Jaryd Shaw, Mitchell Wilson
Port United vs Valentine U18's and U23's (3.30pm and 5pm) Port United Premier League players will have their first game of the season tomorrow when they take on the Newcastle based Valentine Phoenix U23 & U18 sides at Wayne Richards Park. The U23 team participate in the reserve grade competition of the Newcastle NBN league which is just a couple of rungs below the A-League so United are under no illusions how hard this trial will be.
Coach Greg Baldwin said "even though we're a bit underdone with just five training sessions to date, it will be a chance to start working on a new look first grade side after a number of last season's regulars moved away. The latest one to announce he's going to Sydney was last years captain Tim Yule which will leave a huge whole for someone to fill". "However, training numbers have been good with over 30 turning up so far so coaching staff have plenty of competition for first grade spots" he added.
"With such a short preparation for this game, we haven't done too much fitness work but have been doing mainly game related sessions to get the boys lots of touches on the ball and remove the cobwebs from the off-season" Baldwin said. "It's a bit daunting to start against such strong teams so early in the year" he added.
United have picked up several new players including Ewan Fraser from Orange, Neil Bruns from the UK, Peter Goonan from United Saturday Mens and Trent Saville. A core of senior experienced players remain including Tony Raymond, Matt Denham, Josh Moore, Damian Cross and Simon Filapek. Last year's premiership winning reserve grade team will fill some of the gaps left with the likes of Brodie Collins, Andy Collins, Adam Woonton and Sam Cass all capable of stepping up and holding down first grade spots. These along with a bunch of talented U18 players from the club's 3 YD1 sides will ensure United can be competitive in 2010.
For anyone still interested in joining the Port United squad for season 2010, training is at Wayne Richards Park on Koala Street at 6pm on Tuesday and Thursdays. You can contact head coach Greg Baldwin on 0409 314 805 for more information. Junior registrations are also still on going at United. For those interested in getting their child involved this season, contact the club at
or call secretary Justin McIntyre on 0414 431 568.
FMNC Womens Rep. vs Valentine Phoenix WPL (6.15pm) These two teams played a 2-2 draw last November in a trial game in torrential rain. This time round however, Valentine are likely to have a stronger side with the inclusion of their W-League players. Both teams will be out for a good performance, with FMNC coach Terry Burn confident the local girls will put on a good show as they gain experience playing at this level. Burn said "this is FMNC women’s 3rd game at this level & they are hoping to play in the Newcastle WPL next year. We will be fielding a young squad for this game with several players not available due to work, but we are still confident of a good result".
Macleay Valley Rangers vs Valentine Phoenix First Grade (6.15pm) Last years beaten Premier League finalists Macleay Valley Rangers will do battle with Valentine in the First Grade encounter. Possibly appearing for Valentine will be ex local player Matthew Pratt. Pratt started and played most of his junior football in Port Macquarie. He made the Mid North Coast rep sides during this time before moving to Newcastle to start his senior football. His first club was Adamstown than Azzurri before linking up with Valentine Phoenix. Highlights for Pratt include playing at the NSW institute of sport, captaining his U16’s FYL side and training at the AIS.
Macleay Valley have not long started preparing for the new season. Dean Riordan from Rangers said "the team is looking forward to Saturday’s game. Whilst it’s early in the season, with the team only training for a couple of weeks together, I won’t be disappointed in the result. The squad has a whole new look, missing some familiar faces from last year and with some new faces giving the players the opportunity of stepping up a gear. We are looking forward to a great game and the season starting."
